The Truth About ADHD & Podcasting Nobody Talks About | How to Podcast with ADHD (and Actually Enjoy It)

The Truth About ADHD & Podcasting Nobody Talks About | How to Podcast with ADHD (and Actually Enjoy It)

Let’s be honest—most podcasting advice wasn’t written with an ADHD brain in mind. If you’ve ever stared at a blank calendar, avoided your mic for two weeks straight, or changed your workflow 12 times in a month... hi, welcome. You’re not broken. You’re just building differently.

In this post, I’m bringing you behind the scenes with my all-female team at Volt Productions—a powerhouse crew with lived neurodivergent experiences. Together, we support dozens of podcasts, and many of us do it while navigating ADHD, executive dysfunction, and the wild ride of creative entrepreneurship.

This is the unfiltered, real-world look at how we make podcasting work—without forcing our brains into someone else’s blueprint.

Let’s dive in.

Why Neurodivergence Is a Creative Edge—Not a Creative Block
Here’s the truth: consistency in podcasting doesn’t mean doing things like everyone else.

It means knowing your capacity.
Knowing how your brain works best.
And letting that be enough.

On our team alone, several of us are neurodivergent—including multiple ADHD diagnoses—and every single one of us has a different approach to managing client work, content creation, deadlines, and creative flow.

What works for one doesn’t work for all. And that’s the point.

You don’t need to "fix" yourself to be a podcaster. You just need a system that supports your mind.

What Actually Works: Team-Wide ADHD-Friendly Strategies

Here are some real-life workflow swaps and mindset shifts we’ve seen work for neurodivergent podcasters, producers, and content creators:

  1. Paper Over Pixels
Digital planners? For some of us, they’re a hard pass. Several team members use whiteboards, sticky notes, and literal envelopes to track tasks. Tangible > abstract.

  2. Color = Clarity
Many of us see time and information in color. Color-coded calendars and task lists make things easier to visualize—and easier to follow through on.

  3. Plan B Energy Windows
We don’t all record on the same day or same time every week. Instead, we look at when someone feels most productive (mornings, evenings, post-walk, post-coffee) and work backwards from there.

  4. Flexible Communication Styles
Working with ADHD means you might love Slack...or loathe it. We encourage clear check-ins, but we don’t force rigid platforms. Voice notes, Loom videos, or a simple "Hey, here’s where I’m at" message go a long way.

  5. Task Lists with Personality
One of our editors has a running list with stickers and emojis. It might look chaotic to you—but for her? It’s a dopamine-rich dream checklist.

Podcasting Doesn’t Have to Follow “The Rules”
The podcasting world loves to shout:
"You must be weekly!"
"You need a three-month content calendar!"
"Batch or die!"

Here’s what we say instead:
You get to do what works for your brain.

That might look like:
✔️ Publishing in seasons
✔️ Recording one episode at a time
✔️ Taking a break (without guilt!)
✔️ Creating short-form solo episodes instead of interviews
✔️ Repurposing older content when your executive function is on vacation

Consistency is about rhythm, not rigidity. And your rhythm gets to be yours.

Supporting Clients with ADHD (and Each Other)
Whether we’re editing shows for neurodivergent clients or working with each other behind the scenes, one thing is clear: communication makes or breaks everything.

Here’s how we support each other and our clients:
✨ We ask: “What support do you need to stay on track?”
✨ We adjust workflows based on feedback—not ego.
✨ We celebrate any progress, not just perfect consistency.
✨ We leave room for life to happen—and for humans to be human.

When you normalize flexibility, you unlock creativity.

Final Thoughts: Your Podcast, Your Brain, Your Way
Podcasting while neurodivergent isn’t about “overcoming” anything. It’s about aligning.

You don’t have to mask, over-perform, or fit into a structure that burns you out.
You can build a podcast that feels good and gets results.
You can rest. Restart. Rethink. Reinvent.

And you’re not alone.

Want support from a team that gets it?
Whether you're looking for strategy, editing, launch support, or just someone who understands that your brain doesn't always want to sit still—we’re here.
