ChatGPT does not listen to podcasts.
It reads text.
Most podcasters spend months building great audio content, hoping AI will find it. But ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and other language models do not consume audio. They consume indexed text, citations, and structured data. If your podcast does not have searchable, indexed text around it, you are functionally invisible to AI tools.
ChatGPT and other AI tools access podcast content through text via web indexing services. If your podcast does not have a published, indexed transcript, AI tools cannot reference it.
Your transcript needs to be:
Published on your website or podcast platform (not hidden behind a paywall)
Formatted in a way that search engines can index it
Linked from your episode page so it is discoverable
When someone asks ChatGPT or Claude a question your podcast answers, the AI engine searches its index for relevant content. If your transcript is published and indexed, it becomes a source the AI can cite. If it is not, your episode does not exist to the AI, no matter how good it is. That's why at VOLT Productions, we publish full transcripts for every episode we produce.
If your episode title is "Episode 47: My Hot Takes," ChatGPT has no framework to match it to a question. If your title is "Why Most Leaders Fail at Delegation (And What Actually Works Instead," ChatGPT can immediately recognize that this content answers a common leadership question. Your titles and descriptions need to mirror the actual questions your audience is asking.
Examples of AI-friendly titles:
"How to Develop Your Leadership Style When You've Never Led Before"
"Why Delegation Fails (And the Framework That Fixes It)"
"What to Do When Your Team Stops Trusting You"
Examples of AI-invisible titles:
"Leadership Chat with Sarah"
"Episode 42: Real Talk"
"Leadership Insights"
AI needs clarity. It needs to understand exactly what question your episode answers.
When you organize your transcript into chapters with clear section headings, takeaways, and timestamps, you are telling AI tools something important. You are saying this content is structured, valuable, and actionable. Language models use structure as a credibility signal. When an episode is broken into clear chapters with labeled insights, the AI understands that the content is deliberately organized and worth citing. Because of this, at Volt Productions, we build this into every show. We structure show notes to make it clear what each episode delivers.
ChatGPT does not just pull from podcast platforms. It references blogs, social media posts, Reddit threads, and everywhere else your content is cited.
The more your show is referenced in multiple places with rich context, the more authority it builds in the AI's eyes.
If you publish a great episode and only share it on your podcast feed, you are leaving authority on the table. But if that same episode is discussed in a blog post, quoted on Twitter, shared in a Reddit thread, and featured on another creator's site, AI tools recognize the distributed authority. Multiple sources citing your content signals that it is worth pulling into answers.
What to do:
Turn episodes into blog posts
Quote them on social media with context
Encourage guests to share and cite your episodes
Build relationships with other creators in your space who might reference your work
The more places your content appears in text form, the more visible it becomes to AI.
Shema is code that tells AI agents exactly what is on a page. When you add podcast schema markup to your website, you are essentially giving AI tools a structured roadmap. You are saying: "This is a podcast episode. Here is the title. Here is the description. Here is the audio link. Here is the transcript."
How to implement it: Work with your web developer or use schema markup generators to add podcast-specific schema to your episode pages. It takes minimal effort and significantly improves AI visibility.
Do not just publish your podcast and hope AI picks it up. Track it.
Here is how to start: Take ten questions your podcast actually answers. Type them into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. See which episodes or sources the AI actually cites. Do this today. Then do it again in three months. Track which questions return your content. Which AI tools are citing you. This tells you whether your AI visibility strategy is working.
What you are looking for:
Does your podcast appear in citations for questions it answers?
How many different questions trigger your content?
Which AI tools are citing you most?
Is the citation count growing over time?
If your content is not showing up, something in your infrastructure is broken. If it is showing up but not frequently, you need more distribution and authority signals.
Getting your podcast to show up in ChatGPT needs to be part of your strategy and be treated as such. Full transcripts. Optimized titles and descriptions. Clear structure. Multiple citation sources. Technical markup. Regular measurement. This is exactly what Volt Productions builds into every podcast we produce. We do not just create great audio. We make sure that audio is discoverable to every system that matters, including AI tools.
